Start by peeling the onions and placing them on a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, slice them into thin, even rounds. Gently separate each slice into individual rings with your hands, making sure they don’t stick together. Try to keep the thickness consistent so they cook evenly and crisp up properly.
In a mixing bowl, add the almond flour, grated parmesan cheese, and your spices (such as salt, black pepper, and paprika). Mix everything thoroughly so the seasoning is evenly distributed throughout the coating. This ensures every onion piece gets the same flavor.
Add the onion rings into the bowl with the coating mixture. Using your hands or a spoon, toss them gently until all the rings are evenly coated. Take your time here to separate any clumped rings so each piece is properly covered.
Preheat your air fryer to 180°C (350°F) for a few minutes. This step helps create an immediate crisping effect when the onions go in, giving you better texture.
Place the coated onion rings into the air fryer basket in a single layer. Avoid overcrowding, as this can cause the onions to steam instead of crisp. If needed, cook in batches for the best results.
Set the air fryer to cook for 8–10 minutes. About halfway through the cooking time, gently shake the basket or use tongs to flip and separate the onions. This helps them cook evenly and prevents sticking.
Continue cooking while keeping an eye on them during the last few minutes. The onions should turn golden brown and develop a crispy texture. If they’re not fully crisp yet, cook for an additional 1–2 minutes, checking frequently to avoid burning.
Once done, remove the onions from the air fryer and spread them out on a plate. Let them cool for a few minutes — this step is important because they will continue to crisp up slightly as they cool.
Serve immediately while they are still warm and crunchy. Enjoy them as a snack, or use them as a topping to add a delicious crispy texture to your favorite dishes.
